Erepublik
Although I feel somewhat quaint admitting to enjoying a browser-based game (in case you had not heard they are almost universally turgid), I have to admit to being somewhat smitten with Erepublik.
Although it does suffer from the “not a lot to do” syndrome common to these sorts of games, it remains a nice lunch-time diversion where I can actually accomplish my goals in the five-to-fifteen minutes I have available. And despite being somewhat difficult to apprehend (for lack of much in the way of visuals) the mythological society being constructed by the players is really quite varied and interesting. There are many economic and demographic differences amongst the countries and some of the national plot-lines are quite interestingly woven. I particularly like the way the developers have interrelated the MediaWiki pages in with the game engine to allow for an even more realism-focused player universe. And with €2 million in the bank, there is plenty of opportunities for them to improve upon the game’s deficiences.
It is likely not something I will play for more than a few months, if for no other reason than that I am going to hit the “social wall” where I can’t do anything new without investing huge amounts of time in schmoozing, but for the moment I am enjoying myself.
You can find me here: bouvard on Erepublik.
If anyone cares to sign up and give it a spin, please use my links as I will get some bonus cash.
